What to Wear for Family Photos in Atlantic Beach: A Coastal Style Guide

Discover the perfect coastal inspired outfits for your Atlantic Beach family photo session.

Planning outfits for your family session might feel a little overwhelming especially when the beach is involved! But don’t worry, I’ve got you. Atlantic Beach is one of my favorite places to shoot. Think soft dunes, salty air, and the golden glow of sunset. And with just a little prep, your outfits can enhance that dreamy, coastal vibe and help you feel so confident and comfortable in front of the camera.

Whether you're chasing toddlers barefoot in the sand or simply soaking in the salty breeze with your crew, here’s my ultimate guide for what to wear (and what not to) for a stunning family photo session in Atlantic Beach.

1. Stick with Soft, Coastal Neutrals

Think sand, seafoam, driftwood, and sky. Soft tones like ivory, blush, dusty blue, sage green, taupe, or light denim all photograph beautifully against the beach backdrop. These colors feel natural and timeless and they allow your family’s connection (and those sweet smiles!) to really shine.

Pro tip: Avoid bright whites and harsh blacks. They tend to reflect light in tricky ways and can look a little stark next to soft beach tones.

2. Keep It Coordinated, Not “Matchy Matchy”

Gone are the days of everyone wearing white shirts and jeans. Instead, aim for coordinating colors and textures. Choose 2-3 tones within a color palette, and mix solids with soft patterns (like stripes or florals). This gives a beautifully curated look without feeling forced.

Think: Mom in a flowy sage green maxi dress, Dad in a light grey linen shirt and khakis, little ones in muted blue or sandy tones with soft knits or cotton.

3. Choose Comfort (Especially for the Littles!)

The North Carolina coast can get toasty, especially in the summer months. So comfort is key! Flowy fabrics like cotton, linen, or gauze are breathable, move beautifully in the wind, and help avoid those sticky sweaty feels during the session.

If your kiddos aren't used to dressing up, let’s keep it simple. A soft romper or cotton tee with shorts is totally perfect. The best photos come when everyone is happy and relaxed, not tugging at itchy tags or stiff collars.

4. Texture + Layers = Yes Please!

Even in warm weather, layering can add so much interest to your images. Try a gauzy cardigan, a denim jacket over a sundress, or a linen button-up left open over a tee. These little touches add movement and depth to your photos (and can come in handy when the breeze picks up!).

Textures like lace, knits, or embroidered details are also great ways to elevate simple outfits.

5. Accessorize Thoughtfully

This is where your personality gets to shine! Think barefoot on the sand with sunhats or delicate jewelry. For the kiddos, a favorite stuffed animal or floppy hat can be a sweet addition and sometimes the key to getting that big genuine smile!

Just steer clear of anything too loud or distracting (big logos, neon colors, or heavy prints). We want you to be the focus.

6. A Few Quick Don’ts:

  • Avoid sheer or overly tight outfits (we’ll be moving a lot!).

  • Skip anything that wrinkles easily (you’ll thank me later).

  • Be mindful of undergarments, especially under light or thin fabrics.

  • And maybe skip the spray tan (trust me natural skin tones always look best on camera!).

Final Thoughts

My biggest piece of advice? Be yourselves. These photos are about capturing this chapter of your family’s story, your love, your connection, your personalities. If you love being barefoot, show up barefoot. If you feel best in your favorite sundress, wear it. You don’t have to be Pinterest perfect to be photo perfect.

If you ever feel stuck or want a second opinion, I’m always here to help you style your session (and hype you up along the way!). Let’s make your Atlantic Beach family session beautiful, relaxed, and full of joy.
